Seasonal Allergies or "hay fever”
is the body’s reaction to allergens such as pollen or mold. These substances,
although harmless, trigger the body’s immune system into responding as though
they were attacking the body. The causes of allergies are a combination of
genetics and environmental allergens. Although, the allergens themselves are
not harmful the body’s reaction to them can produce some miserable symptoms. If
your child has chronic symptoms similar to that of a cold for more than a week
or two around the same time every year, consult your physician. Allergy testing
may be necessary to identify the exact cause.
You cannot prevent your child from getting allergies. However, there are ways to minimize symptoms by reducing exposure to allergens.
Treatment will vary based on the type and severity of allergies. Try a saline nasal rinse for mild symptoms. For more persistent symptoms call us about over-the-counter antihistamines, allergy medicines or allergy shots.
