What is constipation ?
Constipation is a very common problem in young children. A child is considered constipated when he or she has less than three bowel movements in a week, has trouble having a large bowel movement, or when the stool is very hard and dry.
What causes constipation ?
- Constipation may be caused by a diet lacking of fiber and water. Eating a healthy diet full of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains will help prevent constipation.
- Some medications can cause constipation.
- Children who avoid going to the bathroom when they need to can become constipated.
- Stress can lead to constipation.
What are the symptoms of constipation ?
- Having difficulty or pain when going to the bathroom
- Going to the bathroom less than usual
- Feeling full or complaining of a stomach ache
- Stains on underwear from stool
- Small traces of blood on toilet paper
How to treat constipation ?
- Plenty of fluids. Try a few ounces of prune juice.
- Your doctor may recommend a stool softener.
- High-fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grain bread.
- Exercise
- Making bathroom time a habit.
